City Sports Store

City Sports, a Boston-based chain of athletic goods stores, retained Mc Gowan as General Contractor for construction of its Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan, in the vicinity of The Empire State Building.

This centrally-located retail project encompassed a complete fit-out of a 20,000 square foot space, comprised of a 12,000 sq ft first floor and an 8,000 sq ft mezzanine area. The first floor houses the main entrance, check-out counter, shoe department, clothing section and a designer accessories display. The mezzanine, accessible through either an elevator or a prominent staircase, features a sporting equipment section and an additional athletic clothing area.

The finishes include dyed vinyl sheet flooring, painted walls, steel grid wall shelving, pendant and track lighting fixtures, and iron handrails on the mezzanine level.  A steel and concrete shaft was constructed for the new hydraulic elevator and an upgrade of the pre-existing HVAC system involved installation of an elaborate, exposed trapezoid duct network suspended beneath a concave concrete ceiling.

To deliver the project on a challenging eight week deadline, the Mc Gowan team extended work scheduling to include overtime and weekends. Complexities included coordinating material deliveries around heavy Midtown traffic and the management of long lead items including flooring material that was manufactured in the Netherlands and air-lifted to New York.
