Comix stand-up comedy and upscale supper club, a venue located in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, was constructed inside an existing building. Serving as General Contractor, Mc Gowan completed an interior demolition, excavated the basement area, underpinned the walls, and installed a new street level floor to support the auditorium.
The newly constructed comedy club featured a 320 seat auditorium, a main bar, a retail space, a redesigned entrance and storefront, a foyer and an A/V control room on the first floor. The lower level housed a bar, kitchen, restrooms, an office and storage rooms.
Interior finishes included limestone tiles in the main bar, hardwood and carpet flooring throughout the space, high-end wallpaper and paint, dropped acoustical tiles and drywall ceilings in the bars’ acoustical panel walls, stainless steel railings in the auditorium, numerous mirrors, and custom-made millwork cabinetry and shelving.
Bar details included copper, hardwood and upholstery finishes. A moveable partition in the auditorium allowed for multiple performances and business events to be held simultaneously. The building systems included computerized A/V controls by Technomedia, rooftop HVAC units and new MEP systems.
The Mc Gowan project team closely controlled the timing of disruptive activity to accommodate the building's numerous tenants. The critical task of underpinning was carefully sequenced, and the absence of a materials storage area and limited access necessitated a complex logistical plan.
